BS (Hons) Biotechnology

Biotechnology refers to the employment of various types of “technology” to use, exploit, modify or improve existing biological processes for a specific purpose; its overarching goal is to enhance the quality of human life – be it directly or indirectly – by producing and/or developing effective pharmaceuticals, bioenergy, disease-resistant and high-yield crops as well as animals, and microbes for remediation in an efficient, cost-effective and ethically responsible manner. The field has already shown immense promise and further innovations are certain to culminate in dramatic improvements in existing technologies and outcomes. Biotechnology is the next wave of change that is likely to be as sweeping and invasive as that brought about by information technology. Pakistan has recently initiated investment on the applications of biotechnology, especially in agriculture for developing insect-resistant and high yield crops, vaccine productiontextile, leather and chemical industries, health, bioinformatics and environmental biotechnology. It is anticipated that its successful implementation in all institutions across Pakistan will culminate in the production of well-trained graduates who are much sought after by educational institutions and corporations within Pakistan and abroad.

Program Objective

The Department endeavors to pursue and attain the following aims:

1.The program of Biotechnology will achieve the following Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

2.Able to understand the basic concepts about structure and chemistry of biomolecules.

3.The objective of the Bachelor and Master’s Programme in Biotechnology is to prepare students for future careers in the various fields in which a core understanding of the biological processes is important. Scientific disciplines such as health biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and industrial biotechnology will enhance the understanding of different fields for human benefits.

4.The Biotechnology Programme will benefit the society on the whole by adding to the highly skilled scientific workforce, particularly for the biomedical research sectors, in the academic, industry as well as for research laboratories across the country and the globe.

Program Outcomes

The students graduating from the Biotechnology program will have

1.To acquaint students with the basic concepts and significance of biotechnology as it stands today.

2.Aawareness of the major issues at the forefront of the discipline, possess an in-depth understanding of the area of biotechnology chosen for research emphasis

3.Aability to design and carry out experiments (safely) and to interpret experimental data.

4.Pproduction of substantial original research of significance and quality sufficient for publication.

5.Aability to present their work through written, oral, and visual presentations, including an original research proposal.

6.Aawareness of ethical issues in research and careers option.

Duration

The program shall comprise Eight semesters spread over Four calendar years with two semesters (Fall/Spring) a year as per rules of the University of Narowal.

Admission Requirements

FSc. Pre-Medical or O/A level with Biology.

Minimum 50% marks at Intermediate level or equivalent

No third division in Matric

Equivalence Certificate from IBCC in case of O Level and A-Level

*A student must complete the FYP in time and submit the project completion report as an individual or in group of three-five students; The collective group report must be formulated and submitted as per format and requirements of university. For the students opting internship must submit an individual internship report dually signed by the supervisor and internship organization. Student must properly mention the task assigned and duties completed in the report. Where students opting thesis must submit thesis as per university criteria. The acceptance of the thesis/report is subject to completion certificate from the host institute and satisfactory submission.
