BS Chemistry

Department of Chemistry, encompasses a wide variety of disciplines, starting from the basic
perspectives of the field of Chemistry and moving on to explore each area of the discipline. The
Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry prepares students for careers as professional chemists
and serves as a foundation for careers in other fields such as biology and medicine. The
curriculum offers a thorough fundamental knowledge of the major fields of chemistry covering
the general areas of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, plus many more specialized
courses including analytical, nuclear, biochemistry and chemical biology. Students gain
laboratory experience in inorganic and organic synthesis, analytical methods, physical chemical
measurements, spectroscopy, biochemical engineering, and chemical methods in nuclear
technology. Undergraduates are encouraged to take full advantage of the scientific
opportunities available in the department by joining a research group.

Program Objective

The Department endeavors to pursue and attain the following aims:

  • To give students a grasp of the key principles of chemical sciences through a course of study and research that enables them to develop skills that are necessary for effectively contributing to future inventions
  • To teach useful skills, because it is a science, learning chemistry means learning how to be objective and how to reason and solve problems.
  • To opens up career options for students. There are many careers in chemistry but even if one is looking for a job in another field, the analytical skills gained in chemistry are helpful.
  • To understand, manipulate, and control complex systems at various levels, such as revealing the molecular level understanding of life at cellular and subcellular levels for engineering better medicine, and developing technologies for managing megacities in a sustainable manner
  • The development of laboratory skills leading to practical proficiency in chemical synthesis, instrumental methods, quantitative measurement, and statistical data analysis.

Duration

The program shall comprise Eight semesters spread over Four calendar years with two
semesters (Fall/Spring) a year as per rules of the University of Narowal.

Program Structure and Distribution of Courses

The program strictly follows the HEC guidelines and specifications for the Bachelors of
Chemistry. Following are the distribution of total credit hours:

Program Outcomes

The students graduating from the chemistry program will have

  • A thorough knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, including atomic and molecular structure, chemical dynamics and the chemical and physical properties of substances.
  • An exposure to the subfields of chemistry, such as analytical, organic, physical, materials, inorganic, as well as chemical biology.
  • The ability to read, evaluate, interpret, and present (via oral and written communication) numerical, chemical and general scientific data, information and literature
  • The ability to carry out experiments, use appropriate experimental apparatus effectively and demonstrate proper laboratory safety skills.
  • Understand current events, including news about petroleum, product recalls, pollution, the environment and technological advances.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum 50% marks at Intermediate level or equivalent
  •  No third division in Matric
  •  Equivalence Certificate from IBCC in case of O Level and A-Level
