Workshop on “Quantitative Data Analysis Tools in Linguistic Research
The Department of English recently hosted a highly engaging and insightful workshop entitled "Quantitative Data Analysis Tools in Linguistic Research", steered by Dr. Shazia Kousar, Assistant Professor of Linguistics in Department of English. The event brought together students of BS English Linguistics, scholars, and early-career researchers to explore the critical role of data-driven inquiry in the field of linguistics.
In an age where empirical evidence drives innovation across disciplines, research in linguistics is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary and data-oriented. The workshop emphasized on the importance of robust research methodology, focusing on how quantitative approaches can illuminate patterns in language use, variation, acquisition, and change. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of statistical reasoning, data management, and the application of SPSS—a powerful tool for analyzing linguistic data.
Through hands-on sessions and interactive discussions, attendees gained practical skills in coding linguistic data, running statistical tests, and interpreting results. The workshop highlighted how quantitative tools not only enhance the precision of linguistic research but also open new pathways for discovery in sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, phonetics & phonology, and beyond.
At the closing of the workshop, Dr. M. Haseeb Sarwar (Registrar of the University of Narowal), addressed the attendees and put stress on arranging such type of workshops/trainings and seminars to cope with the growing mandate of research in the globe. Dr. M. Salman Mubarik (Director of Office of the Research, Innovation and Commercialization) joined hands with Dr. M. Haseeb Sarwar in distribution of certificates to the resource person Dr. Shazia Kousar, Incharge,  Mr. Nasar Iqbal, faculty members of the department and the participants from BS English Linguistics.
This initiative reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to fostering a research-oriented academic culture and equipping scholars with the analytical tools necessary for cutting-edge linguistic inquiry. The enthusiastic participation and feedback from attendees underscore the growing interest in empirical methodologies in the study of language.
